Itinerary:
Join us for a leisurely 4 mile twilight hike to kick off the weekend. We will start with an easy stroll through the .75  mile Nature Garden Trail. This fairly level loop winds through a mature oak and hickory grove and includes a few "stream" crossings. We should see Mountain Laurel in bloom and maybe a few late-blooming azaleas.

Next, we will head back to the walk up trail in time to catch the sunset at 8:18 p.m. We will hike at a moderate pace. You are welcome to explore on your own or stick with the group. The walk up trail gains about 650 feet of elevation in one mile.

Depending on the weather, be prepared for very slippery areas. Wear sturdy shoes with excellent traction. It can be very windy at the top of the mountain, so bring a hat or windbreaker. We will head back down the mountain after sunset, so bring a head lamp if you have one.

Currently, the weather forecast for Friday indicates clear skies and a high of 77. Even without a spectacular sunset, the view from the top is great.

  • water

Recommended Items to Bring:

How to Get There:
Event Directions:DIRECTIONS: To the main entrance- From I-285 take U.S. Hwy 78 East (Snellville/Athens) exit. Travel about 7 miles and take Exit 8, the Stone Mountain Park Main Entrance. After entering the main entrance, proceed straight ahead. The road will fork at about 1 mile - stay to the right. Continue to follow the road for another mile to the Confederate Hall parking lot which will be on your left. We'll meet (at 6:15 p.m.) in front of the Whistle Stop Station restroom area, which is just beyond the parking lot.

FREE PARK AND WALK: For free public parking in Stone Mountain Village, from Hwy 78 take exit 5 and merge onto GA 10. Proceed 0.5 miles to the first exit. At the end of the ramp turn left. Drive a mile or so, past a gas station and a funeral parlor (both on your right). When you see City Hall turn left. There is a Marta park-and-ride between 4th and 5th streets. From there it is a short walk on East Mountain Street. Enter the park through the gate, and cross the parking lot to the restroom area where we'll be meeting.

For those unfamiliar with the Park and Ride lot, call or text me in advance if you want to meet at 6:00 to walk from the lot to the park entrance together.
