Itinerary:

One of the most spectacular canyons in the eastern U.S., Tallulah Gorge is two miles long and nearly 1,000 feet deep. Visitors can hike rim trails to several overlooks, or they can obtain a free permit (limit 100 per day) to hike down to the gorge floor. A suspension bridge sways 80 feet above the rocky bottom, providing spectacular views of the river and waterfalls.
We will try to obtain a permit, hence the early start, and hike both along the rim, and down in the gorge, making this a hike and swim only for the very fit hikers, with no fear, but a healthy respect for heights. You must also be able to cross streams with rushing water and slippery rocks.
Once we acheive a good workout climbing up and down the gorge and along the rim, we will swim in the pool below Bridal Veil Falls. You can also slide down these falls into the nice deep pool of water below. This will be a good time to drink, eat and relax in the sun as well. We will be in no hurry to get back to the city, so please bring enough water and food to enjoy most of the day in this gorge. And don't forget your swim suit, sun screen, towel, sunglasses and hat.

Required Items to Bring:
Eat breakfast before we meet at car pool, or bring something with you to eat in car on the ride up, lunch/snacks, 2+ liters water, good gripping hiking boots/shoes, sunscreen, towel, hat. An attitude to get a good workout, followed by a good refreshing mountain water cleanse, possibly multiple times.
If you're willing to drive, please have enough gas in your car before we meet. Once we have our permits, we can slow down and enjoy the day.
Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.
hiking poles, cooler for cold drink after last hike out of gorge. An additional small lightweight towel for wiping feet before putting footware back. This could be done several times over the day.
