Itinerary:
Here's a gem of a hike that has quickly become one of my favorites. I offered this hike a few weeks ago and everyone loved it, so I'd like to offer it again. This time with a bonus - I'm adding a short side hike to see one of the largest Poplar trees in the south east - The Waslick Poplar. Although the tree is now dead and bug eaten, the venerable giant is impressive none the less. This is a great hike for D4 hikers looking to enter the realm of D5 hikes, but be warned this hike will test you if you are new to D5's.

From Rock Gap, we'll hike about 6 miles on the Appalachian Trail to Albert Mountain. Atop the mountain is a fantastic fire tower. I cannot guarantee that it will be unlocked, but I was there recently and was able to climb to the top for an incredible 360 degree view. We can take our time at the top for taking in the views and lunch. Then we'll hike the 6 miles back. I encourage you to check out the two AT shelters along the way and this time of year we're sure to run into several thru-hikers on their way to Maine! Once back at the Rock Gap parking lot we'll take a side trail down through an amazing hardwood forest to see the Waslick Poplar. Then on the way back to Atlanta, if everyone is up for it, we'll enjoy a post hike celebration dinner at La Cabana in Clayton.

Total hiking distance - about 13.2 miles. Elevation gain - about 1380 feet.

Note: This is not a beginner's hike. You should have some experience hiking long distances in the mountains.

And please join me in practicing Leave No Trace outdoor ethics while on the trail.
