Itinerary:
Join us for another wet, butt-sliding adventure in awesome Tallulah Gorge, just a little over an hour from Atlanta. In about 3-4 total miles, we'll stop at a handful of overlooks, descend 600+ stairs crossing a suspension bridge over the gorge, cross the waist-deep river and then pick our way downstream about a mile to Bridal Veil Falls, or as it's more appropriately known, Sliding Rock where we'll spend about 2 hours swimming, sliding, and sunning. This is a really fun afternoon for those who are comfortable scrambling through boulders and swimming.

CAUTION: Footing is slippery in places.  Shoes with good traction may be a better choice than hiking boots. River shoes for crossings and play at sliding rock are recommended.

Gorge access is limited to the first 100 people per day, so we need to get there early to make sure we get passes.  We plan to leave the Park & Ride at 6:30 AM and return by mid-afternoon.

Interesting fact: The final crash scene from the award-winning 1972 movie Deliverance was filmed in Tallulah Gorge.  You might think about watching the movie before the hike.  (Deliverance: Four suburban friends take a canoeing trip down a Georgia river, but what starts as a lighthearted adventure becomes a voyage into the heart of darkness when redneck locals descend on the foursome and force them to kill or be killed. Jon Voight, Burt Reynolds, Ronny Cox and Ned Beatty star in this terrifying, enthralling, existential action epic that earned three Academy Award nominations: Best Picture, Best Director and Best Editing)

Gasoline: For our trips, we expect passengers (not drivers) to contribute enough to cover the cost of gas for the carpool fleet. All passengers will pay the same amount.  Including the $5 per vehicle fee to enter the Park, it should run about $11-12 pp.  Please disregard the Carpool Cost section below.

Required Items to Bring:
  • Lunch
  • Towel
  • Sunscreen
  • Dry clothes for the ride home
  • Bring lots of water for this one! We recommend freezing a bottle or two of water the night before, but remember to remove a few tablespoons first b/c the water will expand when it freezes.

Carpool Cost: Estimated cost per vehicle for this event is $62.00 using a reimbursement rate guideline of $0.400 per mile.
