Itinerary:
How about a combo Hiking and Tubing event? We will hike about 7 miles on the Appalachian Trail starting at Woody Gap which is just a little over an hour away from Atlanta. On the way back we will stop off at Appalachian Outfitters just south of Dahlongea for a tubing trip to cool off.

We will hike approximately 3.5 miles south to Gooch Gap with some real nice views of the valley. Although the relief map looks pretty level, the trail is very rocky and is usually muddy in some sections. After a short lunch, we will hike back to Woody Gap. Total hiking distance should be about 7 miles.

For those that have not hiked the Georgia AT or similar mountain trails, it is not like hiking on the trails within one hour of Atlanta. It’s rocky, it’s muddy, you go up and you go down, with 500 to 1000 foot elevation changes not uncommon. It is a little easier than some of the AT hikes we have done but you still need to be in good shape to attempt it. If you have done some hikes in the Atlanta area such as Kennesaw Mountain, Stone Mountain or at one of the Chattahoochee NRA parks and looking for something a little more challenging, this maybe a good one to try. Also note it is July and while it is usually a little cooler up in the mountains (the hike elevation is around 3,500 feet) it will likely be warm and muggy. If you are unsure you are up for this hike, please e-mail the trip leader.

On the drive back we will stop off for the tubing trip. They have changing rooms at Appalachian Outfitters so you can take off your hiking gear and put on your swimsuits. Below is from thier website www.canoegeorgia.com

"We'll transport you and your tube to the beginning of the float where you can splash into the river and cool off. The tubing trip will take 30 to 45 minutes, but if you want more time to float, an easy nature trail (10 minute hike) will take you back to the beginning to float it again."

We are looking to end the hiking portion by 2 PM and arrive at Appalachain Outfitters around between 2:30 and 3:00PM. We should be finished by 5 PM and be back at the carpool location by 6 PM provided your carpool group does not stop for dinner afterwords.
