Itinerary:
Both of these trails are located in the Lake Russell Wildlife Management Area in the scenic Chattahoochee National Forest, in northeast Georgia.

The Broad River Trail initially follows picturesque Dick's Creek, then turns to follow the Broad River.  We'll see a rich variety of mature hardwoods and lots of cascading water features.  Probably 75% of this trail follows flowing water.  The trail is 4.1 miles, with minimal elevation gain of about 200 feet.  I have hiked it before and enjoyed it very much.

We will then drive to a different part of the WMA to the Lady Slipper Trail.  This trail is only moderately difficult with a few steep climbs. It is 6.2 miles long.  Your trip leaders have never hiked this trail, but it is reputed to feature a variety of blooming plants in summer, including trees, shrubs and wild flowers.

We'll hike at an average pace with a brief rest stop every 30 minutes or so, depending on the temperature.  While this is not a power hike, you need to have the ability to maintain a steady pace.

Notes:

(1) Your trip leaders have not hiked the Lady Slipper Trail before.  We have studied the guide books and will have our materials in hand.  By all accounts, the trail is well marked and easy to follow.  Nevertheless, you should have a sense of adventure and be in good enough condition to walk further if we miss a turn.

(2)  The time estimate for the trip is just an estimate.  Since we cannot guarantee a return time, it is best that you not have some kind of pressing engagement in Atlanta which requires a prompt return.
