Itinerary:

Atlanta RocksAtlanta Rocks is a smaller gym compared to Stone Summit, but it doesn’t usually get as crowded. It has about 50 top-rope stations. The climbs there are shorter but arguably more technical than the ones in Stone Summit. It is a great place to build your climbing skills.

When you get to the gym pay at the front desk first. Don’t forget to mention that you are with our group. Get the equipment if you don't have it. The gear is not included in the price. Detailed price information can be found below. Look for the trip leader or the sign-in sheet. Make sure you check your name on our list and get a name tag, so other members know you are with us.

If you are new to this type of event with the AOC, try to be there before 6:30 PM so the Trip Leader can help you get acquainted with regular AOC climbers. We will be waiting next to the front door of the gym. If the high-top table is available, that's where you can find us. After that, we'll start climbing. Since it is a small gym, you shouldn't have any problems finding us.

Climbing, by nature, is small group event. If you show up after 6:30, you probably won't find the Trip Leader(s) at the sign-up table. Nor will you find 20 AOC members hanging out in a large group. You'll find small groups of AOC folks scattered around the gym trying out different walls to climb. Some will have name tags. Look for these folks to point you out to the Trip Leader(s) or just introduce yourself and ask if you can join their group.

Also be aware that climbing is a partner concept. One person belays, the other climbs. And then they switch. As someone new to climbing, not being able to return the favor of belaying is fine. But the faster you become belay certified, the better it is for everyone. It's a free certification at this gym, pretty easy to do, and helps out someone else who wants to climb while you're resting from the climb you just did. Trust me, climbing is much more fun when you belay.

Note that it is not our responsibility to teach you how to climb. However, the Trip Leader and other experienced AOC climbers are most likely going to be there and willing to give advice and get you started on the right path.

The routes you choose can be as easy or as hard as you want. They range from 5.5 (Beginner) to 5.13 (Advanced.) You don't need to feel intimidated. Every advanced climber was a beginner at some point in their lives. If you get tired, you can stop to rest, sit around, watch other climbers, or just socialize. The most important thing in rock climbing is not to conquer every route in the gym, but to have fun while you are climbing.

If you are a regular, we may ask you to accept one of the beginners in your group. You don't have to do it, but this helps us a lot especially when there are a lot of new climbers.

If you are not belay certified at Atlanta Rocks, you can ask a staff member to test you. The test doesn't take long. They will test you if you know how to tie and check a figure-8 knot, the belay commands, the proper use of a harness, if you belay and lower without letting go of the break hand, and so on. If you belay at the other climbing events, you shouldn't have any problems.
