Itinerary:

Ok I thought this would be a nice bookend to TL Armin's St Mtn sunrise hike...

So let's end the day right with a hike for the sunset at the summit of Stone Mountain.  It takes about 30 minutes to get to the top. Once there we can enjoy some evening dinner snacks.  Everyone is encouraged to hike at their own pace.

(The main reason I am doing this hike on this date is that this is the day where the sun sets on the horizon between Kennesaw Mtn and Little KM.  It does this twice a year and just fun to see.

We will meet at the restrooms near the beginning of main walkup trail (beside Confederate Hall).

Sunset is at 8:43 PM.

If you want to hang out after the sunset until 9:30, then the St Mtn lasershow starts and you can see some fireworks from the show.  Or after the sunset, hike down and around and watch the lasershow from the front if you would like.  That is what I plan to do and all are welcome to join me, but it may be crowded and "standing room only" down at the lasershow lawn.  I think it would be five miles total to hike up and down the mtn and to the lasershow area and back.

We will meet near the start of the walk-up trail near the parking lot beside Confederate Hall. There is a $10 fee to drive into the Park; however, free parking is available in Stone Mountain Village. See directions below...

Required Items to Bring:
shoes or boots with good traction (important!)
Headlamp or flashlight (actually optional if you choose to leave right after the sunset, you'll have plenty of light to get down).
Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.
camera
tripod
water & snack

How to Get There:
Event Directions:

If you would like to try the free public parking, there is a Marta Park and Ride on Fourth Street in Stone Mountain Village. From there it is a less than a half mile walk on East Mountain Street into the Park and you will end up right at the start of the walk-up trail where we are meeting.

Use the Google Map for exact directions from your location.

Additional directions and maps can be found at:
http://stonemountainpark.com/default.aspx

To the main entrance- From I-285 take U.S. Hwy 78 East (Snellville/Athens) exit. Travel about 7 miles and take Exit 8.  After entering the Park, proceed straight ahead. The road will fork in about 1 mile - stay to the right. Continue to follow the road for another mile. Confederate Hall will be on your left. The parking lot will be immediately after. We will meet behind Confederate Hall, right outside of the railroad track and near the restrooms...at the start of the walk up trail.
