Itinerary:
This is the first of two hikes scheduled for the weekend of September 17-18, near Hendersonville, North Carolina.  Each hike will be posted separately, and you may register for either or both.  You may elect to stay overnight in North Carolina (at the lodging of your choice) or return to Atlanta the same day.

If you are a waterfall lover, the Dupont Five Falls Loop may be the event for you.  Our hike will  feature the following waterfalls:  Hooker Falls; High Falls; Triple Falls; Wintergreen Falls; and Grassy Creek Falls.  Several of these falls appeared in the movie The Last Of The Mohicans, and are all located within Dupont State Forest, the most visited forest in North Carolina.

The hike is 11.2 miles with approximately 1200 feet of elevation gain.  We're listing this as a D5 due to the distance.  However, because the elevation gain is only moderate, we expect the hike to be on the easier end of the D5 spectrum.

Following the hike, those of us spending the night in North Carolina (or those who are not in a hurry to return to Atlanta) will have a leisurely meal together, while those anxious to return to Atlanta may do so.

Note:  The concept for these two weekend hikes is to provide participants with multiple options.  Your TLs plan to leave Atlanta on Friday night and return to Atlanta on Sunday afternoon.  However, you may also make either hike a one day event.  For example, you may leave Atlanta on Saturday morning and return Saturday night.  Following registration for these events, we will circulate an email to assist in crystallizing carpool arrangements based upon your chosen departure date.

Disclosure:  Your TLs, who enjoy exploring new places (to them, anyway) have not hiked these trails.  Therefore, please have a sense of adventure and be in sufficient physical condition to hike extra mileage if we miss a turn somewhere.  It is our understanding that the trails are well-marked, and we will have maps in hand.

Carpool Cost: Estimated cost per vehicle for this event is $136.00 using a reimbursement rate guideline of $0.400 per mile. The total amount should be divided by the number of people in the vehicle, including the driver. This is a guideline, not a rule, for drivers but the cost should not be higher unless there are extenuating circumstances.

Notes:
It is anticipated there will be one or two carpools, depending on the preferences of our participants:  one on Friday night and one on Saturday morning.  Once we determine the preferences of the group, we will update this information.  As previously noted, your TLs plan to drive to N.C. on Fraiday night.

For those who request it, I am happy to share the information I have gathered on places to stay near the trailhead.
