Itinerary:
This hike will start at Courthouse Gap trailhead.  We will hike up to the Bartram trail and then head south until we reach the steep side trail that leads to Pinnacle Peak.  After we reach the top of Pinnacle Peak we will enjoy the view and look at our next destination, Rock Mountain:

We will reach this by returning to the Bartram trail and heading north, going past Rock Mountain and then bushwhack up the back side of it. The bushwhacking portion will only be about .5 miles through fairly open forest and brushy areas.  We will not have to fight through any rhododendron thickets.  We will have lunch at a rocky outcrop at the top of the mountain and then return to our cars.

At 10 miles and 2600 feet of elevation gain this will be a strenuous hike. We will be hiking at a moderate pace(by D5 standards). Faster hikers can go ahead to Pinnacle Peak and on the return trip but we will stay together while going to Rock Mountain so nobody misses the unmarked turn to Rock Mountain and ends up going to Rabun Bald.

It is probably going to be hot so be sure to take plenty of water.  We will be going through some brush so insect repellant is recommended to keep the ticks and chiggers off.

Depending on the group this hike will probably take 5 to 7 hours. The drive is about 1.75 hours each way not counting the usual break on the way up or dinner on the way back.

After the hike we will stop in Clayton for dinner if enough people are interested.

NOTE:
Because this a D5 event, if you have not very recently completed some tough AOC hikes, I will be contacting you to determine your level of fitness and experience to make sure this is the right hike for you.

This hike will be cancelled if the chance of thunderstorms is 50% or greater or a steady all day rain is forecast.

Carpool Cost: Estimated cost per vehicle for this event is $72.00 using a reimbursement rate guideline of $0.400 per mile. The total amount should be divided by the number of people in the vehicle, including the driver. This is a guideline, not a rule, for drivers but the cost should not be higher unless there are extenuating circumstances.

Notes:
This hike will be cancelled if the chance of thunderstorms is 50% or greater or a steady all day rain is forecast.

Due to limited parking at the trailhead this event will be strictly limited to 8 people in 2 cars.  If you want to meet at the event plan on meeting one of the drivers in Clayton and leaving your car there.

There are a lot of brushy areas we will go through while bushwhacking up Rock Mountain and ticks seem more abundant than usual this year.  Insect repellant is recommended.

* We encourage all members to follow our Etiquette Guidelines while participating in AOC events.
