Itinerary:
We will start at the Byron Reese Trailhead , take the short but sometimes steep connector trail to the AT and then head to the top of Blood Mountain climbing 1500 feet in the first 2 miles. From there we will follow an old, overgrown road down the other side of Blood Mountain to Slaughter Gap. We will then take the old Slaughter Gap trail for about .5 mile until it meets with the new trail which will take us to lake Winfield Scott. After having lunch at the lake we will start going uphill again taking another steep connector trail to Jarrad Gap on the AT. We will then follow the AT back to the top of Blood Mountain. From there we will return to our cars the way we came in.

This hike will be 12 miles long and have about 3200 feet of elevation gain. Part of this hike will be on an unmaintained trail and overgrown road which makes hiking more difficult.

To avoid any confusion we will stay together while following the overgrown road and unmaintained trails. Faster hikers can go ahead while we are on the AT but we will stop at all the major trail intersections to regroup.

This hike will probably take 5.5 to 8 hours. The drive is a little over 1.5 hours each way not counting the usual breaks on the way up or back.

NOTES:

Because this a D5 event, if you have not very recently completed some tough AOC hikes, I will be contacting you to determine your level of fitness and experience to make sure this is the right hike for you.

This hike will be cancelled if the chance of thunderstorms is 50% or greater or a steady all day rain is forecast.

We will be hiking through some brushy areas so consider using insect repellant.

I prefer hiking with a small group. If this event does fill up I will not increase the group size by adding people from the waiting list unless someone that is registered drops out.

Carpool Cost: Estimated cost per vehicle for this event is $64.00 using a reimbursement rate guideline of $0.400 per mile. The total amount should be divided by the number of people in the vehicle, including the driver. This is a guideline, not a rule, for drivers but the cost should not be higher unless there are extenuating circumstances.
