Itinerary:

This is a pleasant hike for beginners and new members!

Join us for an evening stroll around the lake at Murphy Candler Park in the Dunwoody area.  The nature trail is a 2. 2 mile loop with little-to-no elevation change.  The trail is wooded on the west and north sides of the lake, and more open on the east and along the southern levee (E. Nancy Creek Rd.).  The nature trail will take us across a wooden foot bridge and over a few sections of uneven ground.

We will stroll around the lake to make a 2.2 mile loop and stop to enjoy the views along the way.  We may see turtles, Canadian geese, mallards, and the common chipmunks and squirrels. Murphy Candler park is a great place to watch the sunset, so maybe we will catch a nice one at 7:10.

If you want to stay with us for a second loop to make it 4.4 miles, please feel free to do so, but you will want to bring a flashlight or headlamp, as the wooded section of the trail is a little uneven due to roots and a few rocky areas.

Murphy Candler Park is a 135-acre county park with athletic fields, a bike path, fishing areas, swimming and picnic facilities. The park is located inside the perimeter just south of Perimeter Mall, between Ashford-Dunwoody Road and Chamblee-Dunwoody Road.

History behind the name: Candler was a Dekalb County resident who served in both the Georgia House and Georgia Senate and as chair of the Georgia State Railroad Commission. He is generally noted for his reform-minded moves, especially when serving as chair of the Railroad Commission, and that his grandfather, C. A. Murphy was an early settler of Atlanta. His son, Dekalb County Commissioner Scott Candler, played a pivotal role in the creation of Stone Mountain Park.
