Itinerary:
Who wants to go explore an uninhabited island with ruins from the 1800's ?

You MUST have a boat of your own. It can be a any type of canoe or kayak but it must float. I will be bringing a large flat water canoe. So if you don't have room for gear in your boat I can carry it in mine. I will have plenty of room.

After driving the 1.5 hours to Crawford's Ferry boat ramp. We will unload our boats and load up our gear. Then paddle just over a mile to the island. We will be paddling across Lake Hartwell. This section of lake is very open. We will beach our boats on the south end of Andersonville island and have lunch before beginning our hike. This is were the exploratory part comes in. I have boated all around the island but never hiked it. It is roughly 3 miles long and .75 mile wide. We will be bushwacking the entire hike. No trails, no maps just our sense of adventure. We will spend about 4 hours hiking and exploring the island.

Little history about the island.The town of Andersonville was settled in at the fork of the Seneca River and the Tugaloo River. In 1801, South Carolina established the town. The town was named for Robert Anderson, who was one of the commissioners that laid out the community.The town grew as a trading and textile center. The Southern Clock Company and textile mills were built in the town. In 1840, a flood struck the community and destroyed the textile mills. The textile mills were rebuilt, but they were destroyed by another flood in 1852.The railroads bypassed Andersonville. As rail traffic overtook the river traffic, the town lost its industry and many residents. The Andersonville post office was closed in 1893.The area was largely flooded in the construction of Lake Hartwell. Most of those buried at the cemetery were moved to Andersonville Baptist Church on the eastern shore of the lake. Andersonville Island, is all that remains of the community.

After we finish exploring the island. We will paddle 200 yards to two small islands just to the east of the island. Since the lake is down roughly 9 feet there is now a sand bar that connects the two islands. This is were we will camp for the night. This is a picture of our camp spot;

The island on the left has some good places to set-up tents. Or you can set-up on the beach there is plenty of room. On the other side of the sand bar is awesome views of the open waters of the lake.

We should be to our camp by 5pm. Once there I will start the charcoal to cook dinner. I will be bringing my camp grill. So bring whatever you want to cook for dinner. I will have a large cooler you can put whatever your going to cook for dinner in. Hopefully we can enjoy dinner while watching the sunset. After dinner we can put some wood on the charcoal and have a nice camp fire. Telling tall tales of our past adventures, and dreams of our furture ones. Feel free to bring some adult beverages just enjoy them responsibility.

Next morning we will take our time breaking camp. On they paddle back to the ramp. We will paddle over to Weldon island and enjoy the morning if weather permits. This only adds .5 mile to the paddle back.

Once back at the boat ramp we will load up and head home. If the group wants we can stop for lunch somewhere on the way back. We should be back to the carpool location by 3pm Sunday
