Itinerary:

The North Georgia mountains may not be the Rockies (or the Himalayas), but they include many mtns that make for superb hikes and offer incredible views.  For this series, we are counting down the highest peaks in GA...

#12 - Bald Mountain

Standing 4005' above sea level with 885' of clean prominence, Bald Mountain is the 12th highest peak in GA.

(For this particular hike there will be a car shuttle on Forest Service Roads. An SUV or a truck will be required for carpool because there's 2 creeks we will have to cross to get to the trailhead.)

We'll start the hike at the northern trailhead for the East Cowpen trail, which is where the Hickory Creek trail begins. It's approximately 5.7 miles to reach the Conasauga River and Bray Field (elevation 1900 ft). There are no long and strenuous grades; however, there are numerous ups and down and most of them short and easy. Elevation change on the Hickory Creek trail is around 120 ft.  Bray Field is an important intersection in the western part of the Cohuttas since two other trails intersect here as well. The area served as a family farm back in the 1920's, a railroad switch, and a logging camp.  We'll enjoy lunch and some view of the Conasauga river before finishing out our hike.

After lunch, we'll will pick up the Tearbritches trail. This trail is rated moderate to strenuous! It ascends very sharply in the first .2 of a mile and then gradually gains 2040 ft. in the next 2.7 miles before reaching the summit of Bald Mtn. (elevation 4005 ft).  It's a great workout because of the elevation gain in such a short distance, but I'm sorry to say there are no views from the top of the Bald. At the summit, you'll get a a short down hill break of . 4 miles before we reach the trailhead.

Total mileage is 9.1 miles and we'll be hiking a moderate pace (min 2.5 mph).
