Itinerary:
Strenuous to Very Strenuous 15 miles

After getting a permit at the park office, we will walk about a mile to the beginning (and end) of the Coosa Backcountry Trail, which is a 12.4 mile loop. We will follow the trail counterclockwise. After 0.6 miles we will cross GA 180 at Burnett Gap, with an elevation gain of about 500 feet, and proceed 3.3 miles to the west fork of Wolf Creek, with an elevation loss of 800 feet. After crossing the creek and adjacent FS Road 107 the trail climbs steeply for about 2.5 miles to Calf Stomp Gap, with an elevation gain of 1000 feet. Here we will stop for lunch. After lunch we will start the steady climb to the summit of Coosa Bald, which will be 1,100 ft. higher up and 1.3 miles away. The summit is 0.2 miles from the intersection of the Coosa and the Duncan Ridge trails and is a side trip. After reaching the summit we will descend on the DRT for 0.7 miles to FS Road 39. This portion of the trail is rocky and steep, and should be negotiated with care. Walking poles are very useful. After reaching the forest road the trail climbs about 100 feet and reaches Wildcat Knob after 0.3 miles. Here begins a rugged descent to GA 180 at Wolfpen Gap, which is 0.6 miles away. We will leave a car parked at the gap as a safety measure. The trail’s next 0.9 miles rises 900 ft. to the upper slopes of Slaughter’s mountain. The first 0.5 miles of this climb is the trail’s steepest grade. After a further 0.7 miles the trail turns sharply left, away from the DRT, and begins a 1,800 ft. descent to Vogel State Park. This descent is very hard on the knees and walking poles are very helpful.

Notes: Cellphones are largely useless after you pass Turner’s Corner, except at the summit of Coosa Bald. Many hikers have come to grief on this trail. Do not attempt to do it unless you are in very good physical condition, have gone on long hikes before, and are not too far over your ideal weight. Travel light. You can leave additional items in the car at Wolfpen gap.
