Itinerary:

Maine Huts and Trails is an organization that built and operate a hut-to-hut trail system in Western Maine.

Basically they have 3 different huts that are very nice Len Foote Hike Inns in the Maine Wilderness.  They have heated bunk rooms, warm showers, large breakfast and dinners are served daily.  There is also beer and wine for purchase. Each also has a library and games and things around the huts to do as well as just relaxing.

The trails to each hut range from 8 - 13 miles along cross country ski routes. The locals tell me there are many other trails we can choose from.  The terrain is very flat, or at times rolling.  The majority of the hiking will be occurring next to lakes, streams, and rivers.  Do not worry though - no chance of snow but we will be there in the middle of the fall colors which is very very pretty in Maine.

This location is somewhat remote when you have to fly from Atlanta and then drive anywhere from 2-6 hours to the valley we will be exploring. It depends on what airport you chose to fly into.  Boston, Bangor, Portland etc.  We will need a location to start and end our trip so I am working with Northern Outdoors, an outfitter up in the valley.  We will be staying at their Forks resort.  There is a  lodge, cabins, camping, brewery and pub, hot tub and more at this resort.  So here is the plan...

Day 1. (Sunday Sept 30th) Arrive at Northern Outdoors' "The Forks" resort from Atlanta.  We will be staying in a large cabin that sleeps 10-14 people.
-
Day 2. (Monday Oct 1st) Eat breakfast at Northern Outdoors then get a shuttle to a trailhead near Sugarloaf Outdoor Center.  There we will hike in the wilderness for about 8-9 miles to our first hut which is Popular Stream Falls Hut.  We will spend the day in and around the area exploring and relaxing at the hut.  Dinner that night at 6:00pm family style.
-
Day 3. (Tuesday Oct 2nd) Wake up, eat breakfast at 7:30am and hike out to Flagstaff hut which is approximately 11.4 miles.  Dinner at 6:00pm and relax for the night.
-
Day 4. (Wednesday Oct 3rd) Wake up, eat breakfast at 7:30am and hike out to Grand Falls hut which is approximately 12.8 miles.  Dinner at 6pm and relax for the night.
-
Day 5. (Thursday Oct 4th) Wake up, eat breakfast at 7:30am and hike out approximately 12 miles to route 201 trailhead and get picked up by our friends from the Northern Outdoors.  They will take us back to the Forks resort where we started.  We will then clean up, get some dinner at the brewery and relax.
-
Day 6. (Friday Oct 5th) Back to Atlanta.

Logistics
-You can fly to a variety of airports and drive to the Forks.  It all depends on the individual person as to what airport you want to fly into.  My suggestion is to visit the Northern Outdoors website and go to The Forks site and select directions.  There it will give you the various nearby airports and the times it takes to drive there.  I plan on having a meeting in late Spring or early Summer for the people on the trip to discuss various routes and ideas if we want to carpool to the event together.

Once you sign up a deposit of $50 is required within a week of your signing up.

Full payment is due by July 1, 2012.

Required Items to Bring:

This is basically dayhiking... but you will need a pack to carry clothes and personal items for 3 days and 3 nights.
We will not need sleeping bags.. the bunkrooms are heated and I am told they are very warm at night.
I would suggest a liner and also a pillow slip (stuff sack will also do).. you get fleece blankets at the hut.
The days will be in the 50-60's and the evenings in the 20-30's.
So clothing is a personal choice but I would suggest no cotton.
Raingear because we hike regardless of the weather.
-
snacks
warm comfortable boots
towel for personal use
first aid kit
headlamp or flashlight
hut shoes (like booties or something to wear around the hut)
no electronics and also if you bring your cell do not expect to charge it at the huts
maps of the area (will get those at the outfitter)
water containers and water filter (I will have one and a backup option)
A happy attitude and the ability to be flexible with our schedule and options while there.

Recommended Items to Bring:

trekking poles, and any other item you think is necessary for your comfort and enjoyment.
