Itinerary:

This another in the Summit Sunset Series where we will enjoy sunsets from some of the finest scenic viewpoints...all on or near mountain peaks.  If you've never had this experience, you don't know what you're missing, so time to find out...

Ok it's been far too long since I've been to Mt Yonah, so need to get back and the weather forecast this weekend is looking superb... at least if you like it sunny and cool.

The drive to Yonah is only about 65 miles...very reasonable. We will stop a couple of times as we near the mtn to take some pics and maybe get a group shot in front of Chambers Lake. Then we will hit the trail and enjoy a nice overlook about 1/3 of the way up. We'll also check out "The Boulder" and then perhaps go over to the rock climbing wall. This involves some light scrambling but nothing major and we come back the same way, so if you want to skip this part, then that's fine. It will probably be too wet up there to do this anyway, as Yonah takes a few days to dry after rain in the winter.

We will take a long break at a rock outcropping for anyone who would like a shot at this very photogenic spot (see pic below). We then head to the summit, a peaceful clearing surrounded by a ring of trees. We will take our lunch break on a South facing overlook with an impressive view of neighboring Pink Mtn...another good photo op here. We will also do about 1/10 of a mile of off trail to the eastern overlook...this is technically "bushwhacking" but very easy.

Then we will head back up to the western side of the mtn to watch the sunset at 5:29PM. It will take us about 30-45 min to get down and another 70 to get back to the carpool (although longer of course if you stop for dinner afterwards...no official plans for that however, so should be back in ATL by 8pm at the latest.

Note: The forecast for Sunday up at Yonah is sunny and high in the mid 40s.  If it's windy, it will feel a good bit colder so be sure you are up for a hike in winter conditions and know how to dress appropriately.  Email the TLs if you would like some layering advice and we'll be happy to help.
