Itinerary:

Ok forecast is for rain on Christmas Day but we convinced Santa and Rudoph and the snow monster dude to stick around an extra day and we will hopefully try this Monday...weather is looking better then..at the moment at least, so keep your fingers crossed.

Join us for that annual holiday tradition of a sunset hike up majestic Mt Yonah.

We sometimes do this one as a D4 and sometimes as a D3, depending on the pace, and also the weather conditions.   We are going with D3 on this occasion and it will be more of a social hike than a fitness hike, although with 1500+ feet of elevation gain you can't help but get a great workout, despite the moderate pace.

The drive to Yonah is only about 65 miles...very reasonable. We will hit the trail and enjoy a nice overlook about 1/3 of the way up. We'll also check out "The Boulder" and then perhaps go over to the rock climbing wall. This involves some light scrambling but nothing major and we come back the same way, so if you want to skip it, then that's fine.

We will take a long break at a rock outcropping for anyone who would like a shot at this very photogenic spot (see pic below).....and then head to the summit, a peaceful clearing surrounded by a ring of trees.

We will take our lunch break on a South facing overlook with an impressive view of neighboring Pink Mtn...another good photo op here. We will also do about a tenth of a mile of off trail hiking to an eastern overlook...this is technically "bushwhacking" but very easy, and you can see Rabun Bald and Whiteside mtn in the distance to the NE.

Then we will head back up to the western side of the mtn to watch the sunset at 5:35PM.  After we enjoy the fading light for awhile (depends on how cold it is), we will head back down, partly in the dark (so bring a headlamp or flashlight).  It will take us about 30-45 min to get down and another 70 to get back to the carpool (although longer of course if you stop for dinner afterwards...no official plans for that however), so should be back in ATL by around 7:45pm.

Carpool Cost: Estimated cost per vehicle for this event is $52.00 using a reimbursement rate guideline of $0.400 per mile. The total amount should be divided by the number of people in the vehicle, including the driver. This is a guideline, not a rule, for drivers but the cost should not be higher unless there are extenuating circumstances.

    Notes:
    - There are restrooms at the Mount Yonah trailhead.
    - The last half mile of our drive to the trailhead is on a gravel road.

(and this will actually be Tony's 50th hike up Yonah so join us for his Golden Anniversary on the coolest mtn in the state.)
