Itinerary:
This is a twelve mile round trip in and out hike in the Dugger Mountain Wilderness. We hike six miles in on the Pinhoti Trail to the 2nd highest point in Alabama, Dugger Mountain, at 2140 feet. Then we go back the way we came.

The trailhead is near Rabbittown, at the site of the now burned, Pinky Burns cabin. This is at around 900 feet in elevation.

We hike thru narrow valleys between ridges for a few miles in mostly pine forest. Then we emerge on the side of the ridge on our way up to Dugger. There we will have some good views of the town of Piedmont AL and the surrounding area, see pic above.

Dugger Mountain itself is just off the trail. There is no view there, but we will see where the fire tower once stood. That's the lunch spot. Then we turn around and go back.

This trail follows the contour lines to the point that it avoids more scenic parts of the wilderness, such as the streams and ridge tops, though it does pick up some good rock formations.

If this trail is not so great, then why should you do it? Well, you may want a change of pace from Georgia. The views are different, and the geology and terrain are different. It is a shorter drive than a lot of North GA hikes.  Also this is an easy hike as D-4's go, so it might be a good way to pick up your first D-4 if you have never done one.

Still, this is a D-4, so if you are not in shape, don't sign up. That said, this is not a fast hike. We will go at a moderate pace and take breaks to let people catch up. If you like to hike fast, and don't like to wait, please sign up for something else.

After the hike, those who choose to may go to eat in Heflin. We will have a choice of Jack's Hamburgers, Marie's Bar-B-Que or Vallarta Mexican Grill.
