Itinerary:

This another in the Summit Sunset Series where we will enjoy sunsets from some of the finest scenic viewpoints...all on or near mountain peaks.  If you've never had this experience, you don't know what you're missing, so time to find out...

Arabia Mountain is a monadnock in DeKalb County, Georgia. The peak is 940 feet above sea level, rising 180 feet above Arabia Lake reservoir. It is now part of the Davidson-Arabia Mountain Nature Preserve, a DeKalb County park. (thanks wikipedia)

This will be a D1 hike/walk around the area surrounding the summit.  I am doing a D6 hike the next day, so want to conserve my energy and this will be a very easy hike.  There are small hills so you need to be able to handle those, but you don't need to be in great shape.  So this is a good event for beginners or for anyone who wants to get out on beautiful day and meet some new people and enjoy a mountaintop sunset.  You can always get there earlier and hike some before meeting the group if you would like a better workout.

Some of the red Diamorpha is near its peak right now...

(Thanks Scott Looper for pic)

It is just a short walk back to the cars after the sunset, so you don't really need a headlamp or flashlight but probably wouldn't hurt to bring one if you want to take your time heading back.  I sometimes will wait about 15-30 min after the sunset if there are still some colorful clouds to view.  But if it is a cloudless sunset, I will head back right afterwards as well.

    How to Get There:
    Event Directions:

There are two entrances to the park, so make sure you meet at the more southerly one.  Don't park at the lot with the visitors center and the bike trail right there.  The approximate address is:

    4140 Klondike Road
    Lithonia, GA 30038

But you will see the sign on the left (if heading south) and park in that lot.
