Itinerary:

Providence Canyon State Park was established in 1971 to preserve the unique scenic beauty of "Georgia's Little Grand Canyon." Due to poor farming practices by early settlers, the soft soil began washing away in the early 1800s when trees were cleared to plant crops. By 1850, ditches three- to five-feet-deep had been cut into the land. Today some of them are as deep as 150 feet and have interesting colors of pink, orange, red, and purple.

We will hike about 3 miles along the Backcountry Trail Loop to our campsite over relatively flat terrain at a moderate pace. After setting up camp, we will continue hiking the Backcountry Trail along the edges of the canyon which will allow some great photo opportunities. We will then have the option to explore the bottom of the canyon on Saturday, if time permits, or wait until Sunday on the hike out of camp.

In the evening, you have the option of joining the Coca-Cola Space Science Center and Columbus State University for their Astronomy Night event from 7-9pm on Saturday night at the park. Providence Canyon is an ideal location to view night skies because there is virtually no light pollution. Through the use of telescopes, they will reveal the night skies and share mythological stories about the constellations. After the event, we will have a night hike back to our campsite.

The total hiking distance over two days will be approximately 12 miles, depending on exploratory hiking. This is a great backpacking trip for beginners.  The total distance with backpacks will only be about 5-6 miles.

There will possibly be no water source near the campsite, so be sure to bring plenty of water!
