Itinerary:
Moderate 6 miles

How about combining one of Atlanta’s favorite summer time activities with a hike around one of the largest exposed granite rocks in the world. We will meet at the parking lot near Confederate Hall to begin our hike. After climbing up about 3 tenths of a mile up the mountain, we will go off on the lesser traveled Cherokee trail to circumnavigate the big rock. When we finish the hike, we will go back to our cars, get our dinners (no need to carry this on the trail) and then find a nice picnic table to eat at.

By this time it should be time to find a seat for the Laser Show which starts at 9:30 PM. We will drive our cars to main lot parking lot after we eat. Crowds gather early for this event, so we will want to find a good spot for our group well before the show starts. After enjoying this unique Georgia event with several thousand others, we’ll sit in traffic for awhile before we leave the park.

This hike is not as strenuous as most that I do, but newcomers should realize that there is no such thing as an easy six mile in August in Atlanta. On some sections of the trail we will be walking on exposed rocks for extended stretches. Particularly if there is a chance of rain it is shoes with good grips are essential. If you don’t have hiking boots, running shoes should be OK.
