Note: This is an "EXPLORATORY" trip. This means that there are parts of this trip, or perhaps the whole trip, that is new to your Trip Leader(s). However, they are confident that this will not be an issue.
This note is here so that you can make an informed decision. When a Trip Leader isn't personally familiar with a trip, there is an increased chance of things not going as planned and you need to be prepared. The Trip Leader may have additional details in the itinerary.

Itinerary:
This is the first of two wildflower hikes scheduled for the weekend of April 14-15 in the Cosby/Greenbrier area of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Each hike will be posted separately, and you may register for either or both. You may elect to camp with the trip leaders at the Cosby Campground, stay overnight at the lodging of your choice, or return to Atlanta the same day.

We will kick off the weekend with the hike that Backpacker Magazine named the National Parks' "Best Wildflower Hike" in its November 2009 issue (http://www.backpacker.com/november-2009-national-parks-hall-of-fame-best-wildflowers/destinations/13593).  The challenging 16-mile Mt. Cammerer loop begins at the Cosby Campground trailhead (.25 miles) and then follows the Lower Mt. Cammerer Trail where trilliums not seen elsewhere in the park blossom and dwarf-crested iris paint the ground purple. After 7.4 miles, the trail intersects with the Appalachian Trail, and we will follow the AT for 2.3 miles until we reach the Mt. Cammerer Trail, which we will hike up .6 miles to have lunch at the fire tower.  After lunch, we will hike back down the Mt. Cammerer Trail (.6 miles) and continue down the AT for 2.1 miles until we reach the junction with the Lower Gap Trail.  The 2.5 mile trail will take us past orchid-like spring beauties that cover the forest floor like snow and pockets of yellow trout lilies until we return to the Cosby Campground (.25 miles).

While this is a long, strenuous 16-mile hike that involves 3,000 feet of elevation gain, we will be hiking at a leisurely pace so that we can enjoy and photograph all of the wildflowers. However, this is NOT a beginners hike, so please be sure you are in good physical condition. Also, we will be starting this hike at 7:30 AM in the morning so that we have ample daylight to enjoy the scenery.

Note: The concept for these two weekend hikes is to provide participants with multiple options. Your TLs plan to leave Atlanta on Friday night and return to Atlanta on Sunday evening. However, you may also make either hike a one day event. For example, you may leave Atlanta very early on Saturday morning and return Saturday night. Following registration for these events, we will circulate an email to assist in crystallizing carpool arrangements based upon your chosen departure date.

Optional Camping: Your TLs are planning to spend Friday and Saturday night camping at the Cosby Campground.  If you are interested in sharing a campsite there, please note that in your registration.  The cost for this will be about $5 per person, depending on how many people are interested.

(Thanks to Jason & EB, who have led this hike with the AOC for the past two years, for giving us the inspiration to lead it this year, and to Clay & Jimmy for the idea of a two-part weekend hiking event.)
