Itinerary:
This is an in-and-out hike from Cole Gap to the top of Yellow Mountain. The recently renovated fire tower offers a spectacular 360-degree view, which counts as one of the great views in our area. The photo, taken by Tony C, shows the tower from Shortoff Mountain. Depending on how long we linger over lunch at the fire tower--and we may be tempted to linger if the currently forecast good weather materializes--the hike could take 6 or more hours.

We start at Cole Gap at 4,200 feet and then ascend to Cole Mountain at 4,600 feet. From there we descend only to ascend again to the three peaks of Shortoff Mountain at 5,000 feet. Then it is down to Yellow Mountain Gap at 4120 feet, followed by a long climb to Yellow Mountain at 5,127 feet. In all, we will have about 3,000 feet elevation gain.

The 12-hour trip estimate includes dinner in Clayton. If the group prefers to skip dinner, you will be home one hour sooner.

I would like a volunteer to organize the carpool at the Indian Trail Marta park-and-ride, for I will be meeting the folks from Atlanta only at the Burger King in Clayton. If one of you would be willing to perform this task, please email me, and thank you.

How to Get There:
Event Directions:From the park and ride take I-85 North to I-985 North. I-985 turns into GA 365/US 23/US 441. Continue to the Burger King in Clayton, GA, where you will meet Dorothea, the trip coordinator. After a pit stop, continue north on 441 about seven miles to beyond Dillard, where you make a right on GA 246 in the direction of Highlands, NC. This road turns into NC 106 at the NC line. Travel about 13 miles to Highlands. NC 106 ends at a T-junction with US 64 (Main St). Turn right on US 64 and drive through downtown Highlands. Soon you will turn left on 4th St to stay on US 64. After 2.7 miles, turn left on Buck Creek Rd, aka NC 1538, aka Cole Mtn Rd. Go 2.2 miles from there to Cole Gap and park on the left side of the road at intersection with FS Rd 4535. The trail head is on the right side of the road.

Carpool Cost: Estimated cost per vehicle for this event is $92.00 using a reimbursement rate guideline of $0.400 per mile. The total amount should be divided by the number of people in the vehicle, including the driver. This is a guideline, not a rule, for drivers but the cost should not be higher unless there are extenuating circumstances.

Notes:
* We encourage all members to follow our Etiquette Guidelines while participating in AOC events.

Cost Includes:Carpool cost: Approximate vehicle expense for this event is $92.00 (calculated at total miles (230) *$0.400, effective Wednesday, March 07, 2012). This is based on the current gas, maintenance, and other costs of $0.400 per mile as stated by the IRS and Cars.com. This should be divided by the total number of people in the vehicle (incl. driver). For example, with 4 people in the vehicle, the expense per person on this trip would be $23.00. Alternately your carpool driver may choose to split the maintenance cost plus the actual gas cost among all in the vehicle. Your carpool driver will confirm exactly how much money they require to cover costs.  Please split the actual cost among all people in the vehicle.

Additional advice: The cost of your trip is up to your driver. Your cost
should not be greater than what is listed above, unless there are extenuating circumstances. If you want to be sure about the cost of the trip, check with your driver before you get into the vehicle. If you are the driver of the vehicle, this is a guideline to what you charge and not a rule.
