Itinerary:

Don't let this hike fool you. On paper it may seem that there is very little elevation gain, but over 20 miles the total ascent is over 3700ft. This is a very strenuous hike and is intended only for advanced hikers with experience on 12+ mile hikes in the mountains.

We will carpool to GA 28 and leave 2 cars, then drive 2 cars to the US 76 trailhead near Clayton (approx. 30 min.) to start the hike. Note: Due to the length of this hike and the extra time required for the shuttle, we will NOT be stopping along the way. There is a restroom at the 76 trailhead. We will keep a moderate pace, but there will not be time for a lot of lengthy stops along the trail.

For the first half we will hike along the Chattooga River Trail and the Wild and Scenic river corridor. At around 10 miles we pick up the Bartram Trail for the rest of the trip. While we don't follow the river for the entire hike, there are many scenic spots, with streams, small falls and peaceful forests along the way.

Carpool Cost: Estimated cost per vehicle for this event is $80.00 using a reimbursement rate guideline of $0.400 per mile. The total amount should be divided by the number of people in the vehicle, including the driver. This is a guideline, not a rule, for drivers but the cost should not be higher unless there are extenuating circumstances.

Notes:
This hike is 20 miles end-to-end and requires a shuttle. We will need 4 drivers for this event. If you are not willing to drive, please keep in mind that if the event fills up, you could be bumped from the hike in favor of someone who is willing to drive.
This is a difficult D6 and is intended for advanced hikers with plenty of D5 level experience. Your trip leaders ask that you show recent D5 experience OR a referral from another AOC trip leader before signing up for this event.

This hike will be cancelled if significant rain is forecast or if road conditions are dangerous.

Since I prefer hiking with a small group, I will not increase the group size if the event fills up.

* We encourage all members to follow our Etiquette Guidelines while participating in AOC events.
