Itinerary: We will travel over Forest Service roads to reach the trailhead north of Springer Mountain, where we will park (no fee required). We hike on the Benton MacKaye Trail south to Big Stamp Gap, over Ball Mountain and on to Springer Mountain, about 2.6 miles. This is the southern terminus of both the Appalachian Trail and the Benton MacKaye Trails. We plan to camp near the AT shelter on Springer Mountain. There is a chance that other backpackers will be staying at the shelter or near our campsite, if so we can socialize. On Sunday morning we will hike north on the Appalachian Trail back to the trailhead, about 1 mile. The pace will be deliberate, since I will be leading and carrying my own pack. We plan to have fun! You are responsible for all your food, water and equipment. There is a spring at Springer Mountain, but the water must be treated. We should be home by mid-afternoon Sunday.
