Note: This is an "EXPLORATORY" trip. This means that there are parts of this trip, or perhaps the whole trip, that is new to your Trip Leader(s). However, they are confident that this will not be an issue.
This note is here so that you can make an informed decision. When a Trip Leader isn't personally familiar with a trip, there is an increased chance of things not going as planned and you need to be prepared. The Trip Leader may have additional details in the itinerary.

Itinerary:
The scenic Mountaintown Creek trail features several cascading waterfalls and stream crossings.  The turbulant creek includes one roaring cascade of 100 yards or more racing down a miniature V-shaped gorge with narrow chutes and waterslides. The trail follows several trout streams through mature Hemlock forests.

From Rich Knob at 3,100 feet, we will descend approximately 1,500 feet over 6 miles. If the group is so inclined, we will bushwhack a little further along Mountaintown Creek to Hills Lake before we turn around to make the steady climb back to Rich Knob.

We will take our time to enjoy the scenary. Most of the trail is moderate with only a few strenuous inclines. Part of this trail adjoins the Pinhoti trail and most of it follows old logging roads and stream beds. We will make several stream crossings, so water proof hiking boots are advised. Unless there are heavy rains this week, we should be able to rock hop across most of the stream crossings.

The weather forecast for Saturday is sunny with a high of 68 degrees F. Although this hike will include only about 1,600 feet of ascent, at 12 miles, it will be at the upper end of a D4.
