Itinerary:
Join us for a casual hike around historic downtown Atlanta while we explore nationally recognized and historically important sites.

We will start our walk at the Historic Oakland Cemetery, and officially end it at the same location, prior to entering the Cemetery. That weekend, the Historic Oakland Cemetery is hosting a paid event that will give us opportunity to refresh ourselves post-hike with music, food and SPIRITS!

Plan to meet at the southeast cemetery entrance on Memorial Drive, directly across from the restaurant, Six Feet Under. After introductions and a quick briefing we will hike from the Cemetery to Dr. King's original gravesite and current tomb. We will pass by his boyhood home, Ebenezer Baptist Church and historic Fire Station No. 6 - one of the South's first desegregated fire houses. From there, we will head towards Krog Street to view the Tunnel Street Art, walk to and through Cabbagetown Park, then finally head back towards the meet-up spot, at the Memorial Dr. Cemetery Entrance.

The total hiking distance is 2.8 miles and we'll be taking a slower pace than most hikes.
Dogs are allowed as long as they are leashed.

Parking should be available since we're starting before the cemetery's event, but if it's nearby, you may want to consider riding MARTA to the King Memorial Station.

Optional post-AOC-event paid social: "Tunes from the Tombs"

Join us if you'd like at the Historic Oakland Cemetery for an event that features musicians performing in and among Oakland's extraordinary monuments, mausoleums and renowned gardens. Several main stages will host amplified artists, while buskers will perform on distinct vignette stages throughout the cemetery.

They will also have free guided mini-tours throughout the event, as well as refreshments, and a variety of local foods including Pallookaville, Sweet Auburn BBQ, Six Feet Under, the Varsity and King of Pops.

Tickets may be purchased at the gates for a fee of $10 for a one day pass. All proceeds benefit Historic Oakland Foundation. Payment will be direct to the Cemetery, not the AOC.

Bring your blanket or lawn chair if you want to hang out! No coolers or outside food allowed.
Dogs are allowed in the cemetery as long as they are leashed.

About the Oakland Cemetery: Oakland Cemetery is a 48-acre Victorian-style garden cemetery founded in 1850. It is one of the largest park spaces and significant cultural sites in metro Atlanta. Among the approximately 70,000 interred at Oakland are: Gone With the Wind author Margaret Mitchell and golf great Bobby Jones, a number of former Atlanta mayors including Maynard Jackson, six former governors, the unmarked graves of paupers, Confederate and Union soldiers, a Jewish section, and an African American section. The grounds of the cemetery are an example of the 19th-century landscape idea of a cemetery-park and provide an ideal setting for its profusion of Victorian cemetery art.
