Providence Canyon State Park was established in 1971 to preserve the unique scenic beauty of "Georgia's Little Grand Canyon." Due to poor farming practices by early settlers, the soft soil began washing away in the early 1800s when trees were cleared to plant crops. By 1850, ditches three- to five-feet-deep had been cut into the land. Today some of them are as deep as 150 feet and have interesting colors of pink, orange, red, and purple. A surprising feature of the park is the perpetually wet canyon floor. The exposed water table creates a pretty pattern in the sand, called a "braided stream." We will begin our hike on the 7-mile Backcountry Trail Loop and continue along it until returning to the canyon floor. From there, we will follow the creek beds into the various canyons. We will return on the 2.5-mile Canyon Loop Trail to view the canyons from above. Total Distance - about 10-12 miles We plan to hike at a moderate pace, but we will take a break for lunch as well as stop to take photos along the way. Trail Map - http://www.gastateparks.org/content/Georgia/parks/trail_maps/ProvidenceCanyon_map.pdf For those who are interested in purchasing a Canyon Climbers Club card or getting their card punched, we will be stopping at Florence Marina State Park after the hike. The Marina is ~8 miles west of Cloudland Canyon State Park. For information on the Canyon Climbers Club, check out this link: - http://www.gastateparks.org/CanyonClimbers/ We will be stopping in Columbus for dinner on the way back. If you are interested in stopping, make sure to coordinate with others in the carpool to make sure everyone is on the same page. A big "Thank You" to Scott and Laura who posted this trip last May when we nicknamed this trip "Cicada Canyon" after hearing and seeing the multitude of cicadas in and around the canyon. | |||||||
