Itinerary:

Mammoth Cave National Park preserves the cave system and a part of the Green River valley and hilly country of south central Kentucky. This is the world's longest known cave system, with more than 390 miles explored. Early guide Stephen Bishop called the cave a "grand, gloomy and peculiar place," but its vast chambers and complex labyrinths have earned its name - Mammoth.

Saturday - Two Cave Tours to Explore Mammoth Cave Underground

Grand Avenue Cave Tour - This physically demanding trip unveils the size and complexity of the Mammoth Cave system. Learn the interwoven natural and cultural history of the cave as you journey through some of the cave's most dramatic passages. Discover gypsum-encrusted halls, twisting canyons, underground hills, vast chambers, and tapestries of dripstone. Enter through Carmichael Entrance to visit Cleaveland Avenue, the Snowball Room, Boone Avenue, Thorpe's Pit, Mt. McKinley, Grand Canyon, Aerobridge Canyon, the Hippodrome, Grand Central Station, and exit through the beautiful Frozen Niagara section. This tour has no shortage of hills and stairs!

Tour Length: 4 miles over 4½ hours
Total Stairs: 670
Elevation Change: 280'

Note: Food is available at the Snowball Room. Box lunch costs $8.50 (cash only). Visitors may opt to carry their own picnic lunch into the cave, but must pack it in a clear, see-through backpack or large ziplock bags.

Star Chamber Tour - See the cave as it was seen by Ralph Waldo Emerson, Jenny Lind and other nineteenth-century notables. Leave waning sunshine behind as you enter the Historic Entrance by lantern light. Follow the paths taken daily by Dr. John Croghan as he tended consumptive patients in his "hospital" 160 feet underground. Gaze upward at rock layers in a room called "Star Chamber." Follow your guide as you retrace the oldest tour trails and exit the cave into another Star Chamber above the nocturnal Kentucky landscape.

Tour Length: 1½ miles over 2½ hours
Total Stairs: 200
Elevation Change: 160'

Sunday - Canoe Trip Down the Green River Which Shaped Mammoth Cave

Green River Ferry to Houchins Ferry -Beginning at the Green River Ferry, canoe the river that helped form the great Mammoth Cave. We will paddle past beautiful scenery, deep gorges, limestone bluffs, extaordinary wildlife, wooden hills, and caves. For lunch, we will stop on a sandy beach or island for a picnic.

Trip Length: 12 miles over 5-6 hours

Lodging Options - Lodging for this event is extremely flexible. You may elect to camp with the trip leaders at the Mammoth Cave Campground on Friday and Saturday night or stay overnight at the lodging of your choice.  If you are interested in sharing a campsite, please note that in your registration.
