We will travel over Forest Service roads to reach the trailhead north of Springer Mountain, where we will park (no fee required). This is quite an experience, as you have some great vistas along the way. We hike north on the Benton MacKaye Trail to 3 Forks, which is a little over 3 miles. This is a great trail that is little used. We make a gentle climb up to a ridge line, stay along the ridge and finally descend into a valley. Three streams come together at this location, hence the name. We plan to camp near this scenic area, so water will be available, but will need to be treated. On Sunday morning we will hike south on the Appalachian Trail back to the trailhead, again a little over three miles. This route follows a creek as it winds south, then makes a gentle climb to the finish. The pace will be deliberate, we will stay together, take breaks as needed, as this is not a power backpacking trip. We will have a campfire, so you can plan to use it for evening cooking. I plan to roast hot dogs over the fire and I’ll have a few extra to share. Bring something to share; a good story, your summer adventures, some extra food or drink, etc. You are still responsible for all your food, water and equipment. The AOC abides by the “leave no trace ethic”, so plan to pack out everything you pack in. We should be home by mid-afternoon Sunday.
