Itinerary:
This hike begins at the Slaughter Creek trail head in the beautiful Lake Winfield Scott Recreation Area.  Initially following Slaughter Creek, we'll then pass through a hardwood forest and cross several small streams.  We'll gradually gain elevation, until reaching the Appalachian Trail.

Following the AT Eastbound a short distance, we'll then climb the "easy" side of Blood Mountain, where, at the summit, we'll enjoy a spectacular 360 degree panoramic view of the surrounding mountains.  At 4461 feet, Blood Mountain is one of Georgia's highest peaks.

After having a snack, we'll return by using the AT to make a loop.  Instead of returning on the Slaughter Creek Trail, we'll hike down to the Jarrard Gap Trail, and follow it back to the starting point.  We'll end with an easy .4 mile loop around the lake.

The total distance of the hike is approximately 9.1 miles and elevation gain is approximately 1700 feet.  While we will want to enjoy the scenery around us, we will also keep a consistent and moderate pace throughout the hike, averaging 2.5 mph.  Please be sure you are in sufficient physical shape to hike this distance with only limited breaks.

Please arrive early to the carpool to greet everyone and work out the driving, so that we can be on the road no later than 10:00am.  If all goes according to plan, we will finish the hike around 5:00pm.  We will then have time to stop for dinner on the way back to Atlanta.

If the weather forecast calls for heavy rains the trip leaders may decide to cancel the event.  We will check the weather and give everyone an update 1-2 days before the day of the event.
