Note: This is an "EXPLORATORY" trip. This means that there are parts of this trip, or perhaps the whole trip, that is new to your Trip Leader(s). However, they are confident that this will not be an issue. This note is here so that you can make an informed decision. When a Trip Leader isn't personally familiar with a trip, there is an increased chance of things not going as planned and you need to be prepared. The Trip Leader may have additional details in the itinerary.
Itinerary: | |||||||
Panola mountain will host an intro to Tree Climbing and hike event for the Atlanta Outdoor Club. The plan is for us to participate in a hike on the River Trail, which is a new hiking trail not yet fully open in the park to the general public. The hike will begin from the Alexander lake/tree climb area, and will include a light bouldering area for us to explore some rock scrambling (optional) and if we are lucky, a chance to climb a wild tree off the trail! Note: If climbing a wild tree is not possible by the event date we will still be able to experience tree climbing at the current climbing tree Naomi Ruth (a southern Red Oak that tops out around 100ft). The hike will be approximately 3 miles or less and is not described as strenuous. However, since part of this trip will be Exploratory and new to the Trip Leaders, please be in good physical condition so that you will be prepared to hike additional mileage if necessary. After the event, there will be an optional social/picnic by Alexander lake. Please bring something to share with the group if you plan to participate in the picnic social! See below for additional details on tree climbing and website link for more information on tree climbing at Panola Mountain State Park: Tree climbing at Panola mountain is an 'on-rope' adventure, you will be ascending a rope into the tree (similar to vertical caving technique) as opposed to climbing the trunk of the tree. This helps to minimize damage to the tree but still allows the climber to reach the upper limbs of the tree where you can sit, walk, and explore! No prior experience is necessary and all gear will be provided in the cost. You can climb as high as you are comfortable on the ropes provided! Here is more information on the tree climbing from the Georgia State Park website http://gastateparks.org/TreeClimbs
