Note: This is an "EXPLORATORY" trip. This means that there are parts of this trip, or perhaps the whole trip, that is new to your Trip Leader(s). However, they are confident that this will not be an issue.
This note is here so that you can make an informed decision. When a Trip Leader isn't personally familiar with a trip, there is an increased chance of things not going as planned and you need to be prepared. The Trip Leader may have additional details in the itinerary.

Itinerary:

The Edisto River is the longest, free flowing blackwater river in the southeastern United States.  With sandy banks and a shallow, sandy bottom, the river is perfect for swimming and picnicking.  Surrounded by abundant wildlife, the Edisto ambles along under huge live oaks draped in Spanish moss, stoic baldcypress, and water tupelo towering from the dark water over its flat and gentle passage.  Our weekend adventure includes 2 days of paddling a total of 23 miles down the river with one night of sleeping in a treehouse on its bank.

The Edisto River has a fairly constant current between 2 and 4 mph.  The river twists and turns, and trees do fall on the outside bends.  No rapids, white water, or dams are found anywhere on the Edisto.  However, you should have canoeing experience sufficient to steer around fallen trees on outside bends in a moderate flow.

Saturday

We will meet at 9am at the Carolina Heritage Outfitters to check in, get a safety briefing, and load up our gear in the shuttle van.  From there, we will travel 30 minutes to our drop-in.

Once we are on the river with our gear, we will paddle 13 miles (4-5 hours) to our treehouse to arrive by the early afternoon.

Our treehouse is nestled in the trees on the river's edge overlooking the Edisto and can only be accessed by canoe. Solidly constructed of completely natural, mostly locally harvested materials, it is furnished with a kitchen, futons as well as mattresses in the sleeping loft, an outdoor grill, dining deck, picnic tables, fire pit, and it is screened with a well-vented sleeping area.  It is shaded and cooled by tall trees and lit with tiki torches and candles.

The treehouse also includes gas burners, pots/pans, utensils, plates, cups, dish detergent, and oil candles.  There is no electricity or running water, but there are outhouses nearby.

In the afternoon, you have the option to hike the shaded walking trails located in the private 150-acre Edisto River Refuge, go swimming in the Edisto River, or just relax at the treehouse. In the evening, we will have a cookout and then relax by the fire.

Sunday

On Sunday, we will eat breakfast and then depart the treehouse before 11am.  We will paddle 10 miles back to our cars, stopping along the way for a picnic lunch.  From there, we will head back to Atlanta.
