Itinerary:

This another in the Summit Sunset Series where we will enjoy sunsets from some of the finest scenic viewpoints in GA...all on or near mountain peaks.  If you've never had this experience, you don't know what you're missing, so time to find out...

I like to do this hike every year, not only to mark the summer solstice, but also because this is the farthest north on the horizon that the sun sets all year, and from this location, it drops almost directly behind Blood Mtn about 15 mi away (see pic above).  So kind of cool if you are into that sort of thing.

The summer solstice this year in our time zone is at 7:09 PM, so we should see the first sunset of summer and also be able to celebrate the solstice time on the top of Mount Yonah...perhaps can come up with some kind of pagan ritual to mark the occasion..open to suggestsions (j/k).   But actually we can celebrate with a little picnic up there on the summit.  Everyone can bring something to share with the group..nothing fancy but have done these in the past and they are usually lots of fun.

For this hike, it is going to be SLOW paced, so a D3.  It is 1500' straight up over 2 1/2 miles, so you will still get a bit of a workout even though we are going to take our sweet time on the ascent.  Actually there is one stretch where everyone can go at their own pace, so you can kick it there if you really want to.  But besides that, we will keep the group together.   But still be sure you are in solid D3 shape if you sign up.

We will take a break at a rock outcropping for anyone who would like a shot at this very photogenic spot (see pic below).

We may linger up there for awhile after the sunset (at 8:51 PM) if the fading colors/clouds are especially nice.  Then we will head down which should take about 45 min and then about a 75 min drive back to the Park and Ride.  So figure we should get back at around 11-11:30 PM.
