Itinerary:
Strenuous, 8.4 miles

Once we park at Bartram trail the hike is slightly more than 4 miles with an elevation gain of more than 1400 feet (start at 3280’, end at 4696’). It is the mellowest of three long ways to the top, but by no means easy; it is a very good and tough workout. The trail on the way in crosses falling water drainage’s on 15 wooden bridges, one with a genuine waterfall. There are several shallow water crossings, none more than a few inches deep. When we reach the top there is a 20’ stone lookout tower with 360-degree views of gorgeous mountain scenery in GA, SC and NC. NOTE: Come and freeze your derrières off with me on what I hope should be a winter season hike, if winter ever kicks in. This hike is a serious workout, which caused me to take many ‘breathers’ on the way in and up the slopes. The well-earned bonus is the exceptional 360-degree views from the stone tower on top of Rabun Bald. It will be led at a slow enough pace hike to allow the leader, if not others, proper breathing breaks; as past a certain point it is constant but relatively gentle upgrade 3-5 degrees. It is enough of an upgrade, to add forty minutes time on the way in and up, compared to the easier hike out, downhill and back to our vehicles.

Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.
A couple quarts of water/fluids, trail lunch snacks, good supportive shoes for rocky terrain and; most importantly proper layered clothing for weather (especially extra layer for winds and thinner air that can be biting at exposed higher altitude of Rabun Bald.

How to Get There:
Event Directions:Clayton, GA in Rabun County Park and Ride only, though will make accommodation for anyone living up north, if needed. From the Indian Trail Marta park and ride lot, we travel north on I-85 for about 12 miles, and bear left onto I-985 to Clayton, GA. After a reststop in Clayton we’ll travel north on Hwy 441 and just north of Dillard, turn right onto Hwy.246, towards Highlands, NC. After about 7 miles we turn right onto Hale Ridge Road in the community of Scaly Mountain, NC and travel several more miles to our trailhead back in GA. The limited parking area is on the right side of the road.
