A national treasure, the vast and mysterious Okefenokee Swamp provides refuge for a large number of animals and plants that thrive in the solitude of the lakes, islands, wetlands, and uplands that make up the sanctuary. Visitors to the swamp can hear the prehistoric bellow of ancient reptiles, the raucous call of the sandhill crane, and the garrulous chorus of frogs. The natural setting is a strange and beautiful mosaic, from a maze of towering cypresses growing out of the mirror-like waters in some areas of the swamp to vast prairie grasslands in other sections. This is going to be a really neat trip. We値l spend 2 days canoeing on established canoe trails through the swamp.

After arriving Friday night, we will be camping at Laura S. Walker State Park campground near the lake. There are many activities in the park including swimming, boating, and golfing. Saturday morning we will have a continental breakfast before heading out for a day exploring the Okefenokee Swamp. We will be renting canoes but if you have your own canoe or kayak you are welcome to bring it. We will be following a well-marked canoe trail through the swamp. We will have lunch on the swamp, either at an established day use shelter or in our canoes. We will provide the makings for sandwiches. Feel free to bring any snacks that you want on the water (power bars, cookies, etc). After returning to camp, we値l have a dinner of grilled chicken and vegetables. We値l end the evening with the traditional s知ores and story telling around the fire. Sunday, we値l have a hearty breakfast before heading out for another day exploring the swamp. We値l finish the day out with dinner at camp. After breakfast on Monday morning, we値l be hiking The Big Creek Nature Trail. It痴 about 1.3 miles. After the hike, we値l leave the campsite to head back to Atlanta.
