Moderate – Strenuous 8.0 Mile Hike

Fort Mountain is named for a mysterious 855 foot long wall constructed along the western slope of the highest point of the mountain. The structure has been attributed to various historical figures, but today most authorities believe the wall was constructed by Woodlands-era Indians between 500 BC and 500AD as fortification against other more hostile Indians or ancient ceremonies. The Cherokee Indians belived that moon-eyed people (aka wall-bilders) built the wall, they could see better at night than day, these people were sais to have fair skin, blonde hair and blue eyes. It is similar to walls that existed around the top of Stone Mountain.

This is one of many favorite places to hike, it offers the beautiful scenery in nature, with rivers and waterfalls, mysterious wall and the tower built by the Civilian Conservation Corps.
