Note: This is an "EXPLORATORY" trip. This means that there are parts of this trip, or perhaps the whole trip, that is new to your Trip Leader(s). However, they are confident that this will not be an issue.
This note is here so that you can make an informed decision. When a Trip Leader isn't personally familiar with a trip, there is an increased chance of things not going as planned and you need to be prepared. The Trip Leader may have additional details in the itinerary.

Itinerary:

This event will begin with a nice easy warm-up as we hike from Three Forks to Long Creek Falls.  Cascading down more than 50 feet, these falls, which almost never go dry, are the most popular waterfalls in Fannin County.  This out and back portion of the hike totals two miles, with only 100 feet in elevation gain.

After returning to Three Forks, we'll begin the loop portion of the hike, which features two of Georgia's most famous trails - the Appalachian Trail ("AT") and the Benton MacKaye Trail ("BMT").  We'll follow the BMT to Springer Mountain, the official southern terminus of the AT.  We'll gain approximately 1300 feet of elevation on this portion of the hike.

After taking a break and enjoying a snack at Springer Mountain, we'll hike the AT back to Three Forks.  This portion of the hike will be mostly flat or downhill.  The total distance of this hike is approximately 12.4 miles, with approximately 1300 feet in elevation gain.

While this is a D5 hike, the relatively moderate elevation gain should make this a good event for D4 hikers to test their D5 mettle.

We will stop for a fun group dinner following the hike.  Please keep this in mind when making carpool arrangements.

Carpool Cost: Estimated cost per vehicle for this event is $68.80 using a reimbursement rate guideline of $0.400 per mile. The total amount should be divided by the number of people in the vehicle, including the driver. This is a guideline, not a rule, for drivers but the cost should not be higher unless there are extenuating circumstances.

Notes:

Please note that your TL has not hiked this trail before.  I will have my map and trail guide in hand and do not expect any difficulties.  However, you should be in sufficient physical condition to walk extra mileage if we miss a turn.
