Ever consider an adventure race but lack the gear, navigational skills and teammates to enter a race? Well look no further, the AOC has an event for you.
Adventure racing is a combination of two or more disciplines, including orienteering and navigation, cross-country running, mountain biking, paddling and climbing and related rope skills. An expedition event can span ten days or more while sprints can be completed in a matter of hours. There is typically no dark period during races, irrespective of length; competitors must choose if or when to rest.

My friends with the TrailBlazers AR Club (http://www.trailblazerar.com/calendar/detail.php?id=472) will teach you how to navigate via a map and compass (GPS’s are not allowed) as you make your way to a maximum of 20 checkpoints over an eight hour period. This MOCK race will pass by our cars so you may change gear, refuel or stop “racing” if adventure racing isn’t your cup of tea.

If you are a beginner, you will be assigned a mentor and placed on a team. For this “race” teams of 3-4 will mountain bike a MAXIMUM of 25 miles (15 is average), hike MAXIMUM 10 miles (6 is average) and possibly bushwack (but not more than 200 yards) over an eight hour maximum time frame.

If you don’t have a mountain bike, others will be on hand to help you. If you aren’t up to the task, you may practice navigation skills, continue hiking, chill at the car or call it a day and head back to Fort Mountain or to Atlanta. This is a very relaxed atmosphere.

Experienced AR members welcome, as you can help the mentors as they assist the newbies!

On Sunday I plan to eat breakfast break down the camp site, and do BOTH a trail run and mountain bike ride. You may join me for the run, bike ride; you may hike with others, chill or whatever. My goal is to leave the park around 2pm and return to the carpool area at 3ish.

If you require camping gear or have questions please contact the event leader.

Who knows how Atlanta traffic will be on a Friday afternoon, but I plan to depart the carpool location around 7:15 and arrive at Fort Mountain to set-up camp. We awake early Sat. to meet the AR organizers and meet our mentors. After the “race” I’ll return to Fort Mountain and enjoy a camp fire and dinner.
