Itinerary:
Easy to moderate 6 Mile Hike

Thanks to my GATC friend Zidi Gleman for helping guide me to both of these waterfall trails just weeks ago. Our first trailhead to Long Creek Falls is five miles roundtrip, mostly level to sharply downhill to Long Creek Falls, which lies only about 100’ inland from the Chattooga River. This spot is north of Raven Rock Cliffs and a beautiful stretch of the river. The hike out is uphill and more of a moderate on the way back to our cars. From there we will travel north on Hwy.76 to Chattooga Ridge Road, turn right and shortcut over to Highway 28, turn right and just south of Stumphouse Ranger station is our sharp right turn into the Stumphouse Tunnel-Issaqueena Falls park, maintained by the city of Walhalla, SC. The tunnel is a historic site, dug 1600’ into the side of a mountain, and was part of a failed railroad adventure; stopped by the outbreak of the civil war. In the same park is the short, but steep trail to the base of Issaqueena Falls, some 100’ in height. We will hike the wet drippy cave with flashlights or headlights to the end for a very civilized large cave experience.

Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.
A headlight or flashlight for the caving adventure, at least liter/quart of water for the main five mile hike, plus trail food, snacks of choice and/or lunch to enjoy at Long Creek Falls by the Chattooga River and good supportive hiking shoes.

How to Get There:
Event Directions:Long Creek and Walhalla, SC Park and ride only unless you live somewhere north convenient to I-85 north to South Carolina. From the park and ride lot we travel up I-85 north to exit 1 in South Carolina, where we travel north on highway 11 several miles, turning left on highway 24 to Westminster-from there we turn onto highway 76 to Long Creek, SC. In the bustling community of Long Creek we find and turn onto Damascus Church Road to Turkey Ridge Road and travel several miles to the trailhead to Long Creek Falls.
