Itinerary:
Easy to moderate funky working fun with the GATC (Georgia Appalachian Trail Club).

This event is for anyone with an interest in the routine but necessary duties trail overseers and maintainers do regularly to keep up this national treasure which runs north to Maine. Among these and important this early in the year is to clean out waterbars that help drain the trail (weeding comes later in year), picking up and clearing obstructions on trail as branches and deadfall blocking the footpath. This includes trimming branches on live growth to maintain a 4 x 8 corridor for people walking with backpacks, to keep their journey snagfree as possible. Our section has a shelter at Hawk Mountain, which we have to clear any trashand carry out in a bag, check the journal (shelter diary of all hikers that stay there) for entries and replace if full, add pens if all are missing. We also have to check the nearby watersource trail for obstruction and trimming. One function Don or I will do asking no help is leveling the new mouldering privy installed this past year-explain its science and function to any interested. We will carry AT tools for raking waterbars clean, and some trimmers of our own to share in trimming branches.

NOTE: Anyone interested in what we do to help maintain a small section of this magnificent trail that runs northward to Mount Kathtadin in Maine should come along to learn what is involved in keeping this a clear and functional footpath for thousands yearly to enjoy as a national resource. Helping us with our trail duties is welcome but not required, as it is our job to do this several times a year in our section. However, any help in carrying tools and work done will be appreciated. We will instruct as best as we can what is expected of any who maintain the trail as volunteers for anyone who has questions.
