Itinerary:

Ok it’s time for another Mount Yonah hike.  I don't get up there too much in the summer heat, but let's "think cool" and perhaps the pic above will help.   I doubt we'll get those kinds of conditions but maybe will get a nice breeze on top if we are lucky.

We will do this one D3 style, with a slow to moderate pace.  We do have a deadline with the sunset at 8:20, so we need to be in position by then, but hopefully we can still take our time getting up there.   It’s only about 2 ½ miles up but gains about 1500’, so a good steady climb, so a solid D3, even at just 5 miles round trip and with the relaxed pace.

We will head up from the trailhead at 170' and our first major stop will be at "The Boulder"...then if time permits, we will probably visit the base of the main rock face if conditions are dry enough.  This involves some light (Class 2) scrambling.  It’s just about 50 feet up and there are cables you can hold onto.   Although I’ve gone up without touching them before when it’s very dry and good traction.  But anyone who is not comfortable with this section can skip it and just wait 10 or 15 min for the group to return to the same spot before proceeding.

Then we will go up and tag the summit and check out a couple of nice spots, including the outcropping where we will take a long break for photos (see pic below) and watch the sunset.

We will have a little self-catered picnic up there as well.  Everyone can bring something to share with the group..nothing fancy, but have done these in the past and they are lots of fun.

We may linger for awhile after the sunset (at 8:20 PM) if the fading colors/clouds are especially nice.  Then we will head down which should take about 45 min and then about a 75 min drive back to the Park and Ride.  So figure we should get back at around 10:30 - 11PM.  Part of the hike down will be in the dark, so be sure to bring a headlamp or flashlight.
