From Standing Indian we will go up 3.7 miles on beautiful Kimsey Creek trail until we reach the Appalachian trail at Deep Gap. We will then walk 1 mile north on the AT to Standing Indian shelter, where we will spend the night. The next day we will continue another 2.5 miles north on the AT to the summit of Standing Indian mountain (elev. 5,498 feet). From the summit we will walk 4.2 miles on Lower Ridge trail, back to the parking lot.

NOTE: The elevation change from Standing Indian Campground to the summit of Standing Indian Mountain is about 2,100 ft.

Required Items to Bring:
I have a spare backpack, sleeping bag and stove that I can lend.
Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.
Don’t forget to bring sleeping bag, mattress, cooking utensils, picnic lunch for Saturday, food for dinner on Saturday night and breakfast and lunch on Sunday (lunch should be cold), stove, at least one quart of water, and warm clothing. A tent will not be necessary since we will sleep in a shelter. I will bring filtration equipment to treat water.

How to Get There:
Event Directions:Standing Indian Campground, NC 12:00 noon at the parking area on USFS71 near the Standing Indian campground (we will have a picnic lunch, and start walking at 1:00 pm). From the Park and Ride go north on I 85, and take the I 985 exit. I 985 becomes GA 365/US 23, which then merges with US 441. Proceed on US 441 until Franklin, NC (the driving distance from downtown Atlanta is 130 miles). Turn left (West) onto US 64 and proceed 10 miles until S.R. 1448 (Old US 64), which is on Wallace Gap, at the bottom of a steep grade. Turn left onto Old US 64 and follow the signs to the campground. The parking area is on paved USFS 67, about 1.5 miles South of Wallace Gap.
