Itinerary:

NASA's "7 minutes of terror" is for wozzies ... how about ~36 hours? We start hiking at the Amicalola Park Ranger Station at 7 AM on Saturday and hike until Sunday evening. Let's see how far we get on the Appalachian Trail in 36 hours: Neels Gap (mile 30.7+8.5), Hogpen Gap (mile 37.1+8.5), or maybe Unicoi Gap (mile 50.9+8.5)?

This is a two-day hiking trip that includes an overnight stay at a shelter/woods on the AT. While going as light as possible, we will be self-sufficient on the trail, meaning that we carry all our gear with us.

The trip starts at the ranger station at the bottom of Amicalola Falls on early Saturday morning and follows the Approach Trail to the top of Springer Mtn (mile 0+8.5). From there we hike on the AT until we reach a suitable camp site (ideally near Woody Gap (mile 20.1+8.5) to stop for the day. The hike continues on Sunday morning with the plan to hike all day or until we reach a sensible exit point for our ride back to ATL. We will be moving at a fast and steadily pace.

This will be a long and strenuous hike with pack. Please do not sign up for this trip unless you have hiked with the trip leader before and are properly prepared (established record of D5-D7 hikes with AOC). The trip leader reserve the right to remove hikers from the sign-up list that are not properly prepared for this trip.
