Itinerary:

Moderate to Strenuous (Approx. 8 ½ mile day hike)

Join us for another adventure in the Cohutta Wilderness. (Note: This hike is different from the hike that we posted for April 28th). This is one of my favorite places to go hiking so on this particular hike we will start off hiking in on the Chestnut Lead Trail. This is a 1.7 mile easy to moderate trail leading down to the Conasauga River, which we will cross and continue hiking downstream following the Conasauga River Trail. There will be 18 river crossings during this 3-mile stretch before we stop for a lunch break near Bray Field. The crossings will be anywhere from ankle deep to knee deep depending on rainfall and it is highly recommended to bring a hiking stick or poles. From Bray Field area, we will pick up the Tearbritches trail. This trail is strenuous since it ascends very sharply in the first .2 of a mile and then gradually gains 2040 ft. in the next 2.7 miles before reaching the summit of Bald Mtn. At the summit, we’ll be at approximately 4000 ft. in elevation and we will gather at the top before we start our descent to the Tearbritches Trail Head where most of our vehicles will be waiting for us.

NOTE: I will be bringing my water filter just in case you run out of water.

2 Liters of Water or sports drink

You will see a sign on the left that says “Lake Conasauga Recreation Area” sign and directly across the road turn right onto Conasauga Rd. (FS 18). Continue 3.5 miles, there’s a wooden chapel on the left and shortly after we’ll take a right onto Old CCC Camp Rd. (FS 68). Continue to the 3 way junction after 6 miles.
