Once again, Jim Greene of the Southeast School of Survival is offering his two day survival course at a discounted price for AOC members. Jim has created a page on his web site just for this AOC event. It contains most of the details about the course.

About the course: 

This course focuses on safety in the outdoors and utilizing tools and equipment properly. We will address what to do in an emergency situation should you become stranded or lost in the wilderness. This course is designed to teach you many wilderness survival principles -you will not be placed in a survival situation.

Topics to be covered include:

  • The Survivor's Needs, Psychological Aspects of Survival, The Will to Survive
  • Survival First Aid and Personal Protection
  • The Art of Improvising
  • Knots and Lashings
  • Firecraft, Shelters, Food & Water 
  • Land Navigation, Map and compass, Signaling, Rescue & Recovery. 

 

About the instructor:

Jim Greene has been in the Survival business since 1979. He received formal training in Survival at the US Air Force Global Survival School (SERE) in Washington state.  He was trained to teach survival to aircrews regardless of the environment; Desert, Jungle, Arctic, Ocean, Seashore, Mountains, etc. 

We will be doing some hiking, so bring the appropriate shoes.

Jim is offering this course to AOC members at a reduced price of $145.  This is a 25% discount off of the regular price of $195. 


Required Items to Bring:

Food: You may bring any food/snacks you choose.  You may bring camp stoves to cook your dinner or hot breakfast, or you may cook on the fire.  You will need food for 1 dinner, 1 Breakfast, and 2 Lunches.  Lunch items need to be items you can carry in your pocket and/or eat while we are working.

 

Cooking pots/cans/utensils, etc.
Portable Folding Chair (This is usually forgotten)
Sleeping Bag  
3 large empty water bottles or canteens.
Flashlight or headlamp w/batteries.
Knives   Be sure your knives have been sharpened.
            1 - Lock-blade folding and/or 
            1 - Fixed blade (non-folding) with sheath. 
Whistle
Small Fishing Kit (String, hooks, etc)
Insect Repellent  
Personal hygiene kit (toothbrush, deodorant, feminine items, etc.)
Towel and wash cloth
Small First Aid kit 

Sturdy hiking shoes plus 1 extra pair of boots or sneakers.

2 pair of long pants (no shorts)

2 shirts 
2  sets extra socks and underwear 
Sweat shirt and sweat pants (in case temperature drops)
Rain gear or poncho
Jackets as needed
1 pair Gloves (Leather or Work gloves)
1 roll Toilet Tissue

You will want to take notes, so bring a notebook and writing tools to record all the stuff you will learn!

**Package everything in waterproof type bags**

Carpool Cost: Estimated cost per vehicle for this event is $58.40 using a reimbursement rate guideline of $0.400 per mile. The total amount should be divided by the number of people in the vehicle, including the driver. This is a guideline, not a rule, for drivers but the cost should not be higher unless there are extenuating circumstances.

Each participant must complete and submit 3 enrollment forms: Liability release, Medical History, and Registration Form.

The Fine Print:

In the event the student cancels, the course payment will NOT be refunded. Monies paid will be applied to a future scheduled course within one year of original date. In the event of a Southeast School of Survival course cancellation due to instructor illness/injury, a death or sickness in the instructor's immediate family, or unsafe conditions in the training area, course payment is refundable, or monies paid will be applied to a future scheduled course date.
