Itinerary:

Join me for a short hike at the John Ripley Forbes Big Trees Forest Preserve. This will be a 2 mile leisurely walk and we will traverse the main loop counterclockwise and then take a break and retrace our steps clockwise. A trail often looks so different when traveling in the opposite direction, so we will hope this is true on this occasion as well. This is a nice little park though...nothing spectacular but if you like walking through the woods beside big trees, then you will enjoy it.

I"ll borrow this description from TL Joyce's last time here: "This is an excellent hike for folks who want to get into hiking for the first time, who want to simply get out and enjoy some fresh air without exerting themselves, or who want to begin hiking again after an injury. We will go at a leisurely pace over the gently rolling hills that pass the watershed of Powers Branch, a tributary of the Chattahoochess River".

If you are curious who John Ripley Forbes was, I found this in his obit: "In 1989, Mr. Forbes learned of a forest in Sandy Springs that was about to become a car dealership. With his help, it was designated a nature preserve. Today, the 30-acre forest, which includes 200-year-old white oaks, is known as the John Ripley Forbes Big Trees Forest Preserve." So sounds like a cool guy.

For those who can join us, consider registering for one of the following hikes. One at Morgan Falls Overlook Park, just 1/10 mile down Roswell Road or one at Chatt. NRA Gold Branch, just a little further away. Those hikes will begin at 5:30pm and will be a little more strenuous than this one.

From 285
- Go NORTH on GA-400 1 1/2 miles to exit 5B (Sandy Springs).
- Go west 1.3 miles on Abernathy Rd. to Roswell Rd.
- Turn right onto Roswell Rd. and go north 2.1 miles.
The Forest is on the right next to the North Fulton County Government Service Center Building.

Going SOUTH on GA-400
- Take Exit 5 onto Abernathy Rd.
- Turn right onto Abernathy and follow from above.
