Itinerary:
Join me for 4 days of backpacking on one of Georgia's most pristine barrier islands, Sapelo Island. Sapelo Island - Background. The 16,500-acre Sapelo Island is located off Georgia's SE coast just 60 miles south of Savannah and 5 miles north of Darien.

I plan to get a hotel room for evening of 30th (Hampton Inn, Darien, GA, $89 (912.437.5558 ~ highly recommend to double-up to save $$).

We will spend Friday morning at the hotel relaxing by the pool and exploring Darien. After lunch, we will checkout and drive up to Sapelo Visitors Center in Meridian, GA. We will have a mandatory orientation and I will purchase our ferry tickets. The ferry boat to Sapelo Island departs the visitors center at 3:30 pm on Aug 31. It is a 30-minute ride over to Sapelo. Once on the island, we will have an orientation tour by the ranger and then board a bus for transport to the Cabretta campground approx 5 miles from the landing dock. The campground is located just over the dunes from the beach. The site includes shelters, comfort stations, hot showers, electricity, fire rings, garbage containers and running water for drinking. Once camp is setup, we are free to explore the island or relax on the beach. Saturday, for those interested, we will rent kayaks through a local outfitter and adventure over to adjacent Blackbeard Island National Wildlife Refuge (1hr paddle). Blackbeard Island NWR Facts. Blackbeard Island NWR - Virtual Tour. Sunday is open to island exploration of the Hog Hammack community, the Reynolds Mansion and the turn-of-the-century lighthouse. In addition, we can schedule educational tours of the National Estuarine Research Reserve and UGA Marine Institute.

Checkout is 10am on Monday, Sept 3 to allow for transport back to the landing dock and loading onto the boat. Ferry to Meridian departs Sapelo at Noon. We should be back in Atlanta by 6-7pm (depending on traffic).
