Itinerary:
Kennesaw Mountain National Battefield Park is a fantastic area for intown hiking. I grew up in the area and have hiked it since I was a young boy.
We will start at the visitors center which has a rather nice museum and movie on the battles here in 1864. Afterwards, we will hike the 1.2 miles to the 1808 ft. top of Kennesaw Mountain. From there, we will head across Little Kennesaw Mountain, cross Burnt Hickory Road and continue to Cheatham Hill (also known as Dead Angle). We will have a rest and a snack at the Illinois Monument at Cheatham Hill and then return to the visitor center but this time walking around Little Kennesaw and Kennesaw Mountains instead of over.
The total hiking distance is about 10 miles. The only stressful section is up Kennesaw Mountain and down Little Kennesaw Mountain at the beginning. However, the trail is mostly rolling hills and wide fire roads. Endurance is the name of the game today. You should be good to excellent condition for this hike!!
